Why We “Like” Online Networking
Coastal Connections is all over social media tools. We’re on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn. This presence today seems essential for an organization whose soul is networking. But why?
1. It’s the new place to hang. For many young professionals, this is practically where they live. You want to reach them; you got to be online.
2. It’s transparent (to a point). Here you can start conversations, track them, save them and, most importantly, reach everyone quickly.
3. It’s growing. As more people join, more people connect, especially in online groups like ours where you can “meet” new people every day.
Why not? Although online social sites are fun and definitely have value, nothing compares to face-to-face networking, where spontaneous conversation can lead to any topic, ones that might not develop when you have to type them. Plus, you form stronger connections, create rapport and learn better conversational skills.
For me, online networking is fun, fast and convenient, but if you truly want to be a leader in real world, you have to get out there and network—in person. (But don't forget to friend us on Facebook.)
